First let me start off by saying this is one of my favorite anime/manga of all time. Although it has little to do with the real aspects of human life, I find that it has changed how I live my life in many ways. Now let me astound you with a short breif summary of this wonderfull piece of work.
Oz Vessalius who is heir to the Vessalius dukedom, has just turned fifteen. His normal carefree extravagent life is only burdened by the continious dissapearance of his father. During his coming of age ceramony, a group of people known as the "Baskervilles" decide to cast him into the Abyss claiming his very existence is a sin against nature. The Abyss is a sort of prison, only it exists inside another demension. The abyss is populated by chains which are organisms that were once human but were transformed into something "else" by the will of the abyss.
In order to escape the Abyss the chain must make a contract with a human known as an illegal contract. Once a contract is made, said chain gains enough power in order to create a "path" form the demention the abyss is in, to our world. Oz makes such a contract from a chain called "Alice" also known B-rabbit or the Bloody Black Rabbit. This is because her true form is a giant rabbit who weilds a scythe.
The reason the contracts are considered illegal is because there is a limiter on them. Once a contract is made an incuse appears over the contractors heart in the form of a clock with its hands both pointed at the "twelve" posistion. Each time the contractor uses his chains power, the hands of the incuse slowly move to complete the incuse. Once the incuse is completed both chain and contractor ans dropped down forevermore to the lowest layer of the abyss. There are ways to break the contract, but they usually involve the deaths of on e of the people involved in the contract.
Alice is a special chain by nature because she has the vauge recollections of being human once. In truth her very need to escape the abyss is so that she can regain the memories of her real life, which were lost to her upon waking up in the abyss. In return she promises to help Oz find out why the baskervilles chose him to be dropped into the abyss and why his very nature is considered a sin.
