Kagome Higurashi (日暮 かごめ)
Name: Kagome Higurashi (日暮 かごめ)
Translation: literally 'Woven Bamboo Pattern' and Higurashi may mean 'Sunset' or 'Nightfall', though some say it has no apparent translation.
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Age: 15
Occupation: Student
Personality/History
Kagome Higurashi was just a normal teenage girl living in Tokyo, then on the day of her fifteenth birthday (In the English version of the series, Kagome is having her 15th birthday in the first episode.), she stumbles into an old well in the shrine that her family cares for while trying to find her cat, Buyo. A centipede demon grabs her and demands that Kagome give her the Shikon Jewel. Having no idea what the demon is talking about, she panics and somehow emits a purple light from her hands that appears to kill the demon.
After climbing back out of the well, she sees that she is in a forest. Running to where her house should be, she finds a tree with a boy that seems to have dog ears, pinned to it by an arrow lodged in his left shoulder. The two exchange words before suddenly villagers from a nearby village attack her thinking she is a shape shifting demon. The priestess of the village, Kaede, notices that Kagome strongly resembles her dead sister, Kikyo.
During their conversation, the centipede demon attacks again, which becomes known by 'Mistress Centipede' at this point. Kagome runs to the tree that the boy is pinned to, Mistress Centipede gives chase, wrapping herself around the tree and at this time the boy demands that Kagome release him and after a few seconds of pondering on the situation and being injured by Mistress Centipede whom took the sacred Jewel, the Shikon no Tama (Jewel of Four Souls) and swiftly swallowing it which immediately transformed her and gave her much more powerful strength, she grabs the arrow which begins to glow, then disappears from existence.
The boy, now known as 'InuYasha' by Kaede, attacks and defeats Mistress Centipede despite her becoming more powerful from the Shikon no Tama. Once defeated, Kagome picked up the sacred jewel which InuYasha immediately demanded to her to give it to him. Immediately, Kagome disobeys his order and runs off until stopping at an old bridge to only to be confronted by Inuyasha again, however by this time Kaede arrives with a holy necklace known as the Beads of Subjugation (言霊の念誦, Kotodama no Nenju) and begins to chant which causes the necklace to glow, then the beads fly towards InuYasha circling around his neck until it becomes a necklace again.
Kaede immediately tells Kagome to say the word of Subjugation which of course Kagome has no idea what she's talking about until Kaede explains that she only needs to say any kind of word. Deciding quickly she chose, quite fittingly due to InuYasha's dog ears, the word 'Sit' ('Osuwari') which immediately upon doing so caused the necklace to glow and pull down InuYasha, slamming him into the bridge. After bringing Kagome back to the village, Kaede explains to her about, InuYasha, and how he was pinned to the tree. She also concludes that Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo. Later on in the day, Kagome is kidnapped by a band of bandits and once rescued by InuYasha, the jewel is stolen by a crow demon and is shattered (accidentally by Kagome's inexperience archer skills.) into many pieces which became scattered all over the land, after this event Kagome and InuYasha form an alliance to search for the scattered pieces of the jewel.
Kagome's personality varies on the situation, though in the beginning she was very nervous, especially when it came to fighting and due to her inexperience her skill with a bow and arrow was that of a complete novice compared to Kikyo, most times she often needed InuYasha and her other companions to defend her. However as she continued to gain more experience as well as gain more allies during her travels with Inuyasha she has become much more confident, a bit more familiar with her Spiritual Powers as well as becoming much more adept at archery, though she is still much too weak to fight on her own and still needs her friend's protection.
Sometimes during their travels, Kagome will often think much more about school than finding the jewel shards, her personality is that of a regular school girl trying to get by in life, it seemed that before her frequent trips to the Feudal Era she maintained a stable grade point average, but due to her trips she begins to fall behind in her work as well as being missing from school quite often, however due to her Grandfather's understanding of the situation he becomes in charge of answering on Kagome's increasing absences by using odd and unusual ailments instead of the usual sicknesses that would normally incapacitate a young student.
Despite her traveling in the ancient time of the Feudal Era, Kagome shows no concern about missing her modern lifestyle, though most of the time she is able to bring her modern appliances through a very large yellow backpack that she brings from her time line. However the only thing she does seems to complain about is not able to bathe in a modern bathtub, though she has shown to be satisfied by the natural hot springs, sleeping in a modern bed, and eating food from her own time.
Often, she will show concern and/or compassion for others, like Koga which sparks InuYasha's jealously. Also she seems to act as the medic of the group, often amazing her companions with her modern medicines.

Weapons/Abilities
Purification Powers
This ability means anything Kagome touches gets purified. By gathering an enormous amount of concentrated power into her right palm, she can direct it at her opponents. She also uses this to purify the Jewel.
Spiritual Powers
Kagome can pass through barriers, spells, and/or illusions. Kagome is also able to sense evil auras and is unaffected by them. If possible, she is able to surround herself with her own spiritual powers to ward off any evil. It is later revealed that her powers are, to a great extent, sealed by the Shikon no Tama, so she may have other powers than these. According to Rumiko Takahashi, Kagome is potentially much stronger than Kikyo herself. Because Kagome is the reincarnation of Kikyo, Kagome most likely has Kikyo's power to add to her own.
Jewel Detecting
This allows her to sense the exact location of the Jewel shards. While other characters have shown a vague ability to see Shikon shards, only Kagome and Kikyo are able to sense the shards remotely.
Time Travel
Kagome can travel back and forth 500 years between the present and the Feudal era using the magical well behind her family's shrine. InuYasha and Kagome seem to be the only two characters in the series who are capable of doing so.
Beads of Subjugation ("Sit"/"Osuwari")
Placed around InuYasha's neck by Kaede and empowered to "subdue" him at a word from Kagome. This slams InuYasha into the ground whenever she says the word "Sit" ("Osuwari"). The effect wears off varying to how strong Kagome says the word and/or how many times she says it, then InuYasha is able to get up again.
Kyūdō (literally "Way of the Bow")
Kagome uses a basic bow as a weapon. Once she infuses her powers into the bow, she can use it to reflect an enemy's attack. Kagome uses a short bow.
Sacred Arrow (Hama no Ya) (破魔の矢)
Kagome infuses her powers into her arrows. This allows the arrows to penetrate demonic forces and to purify objects.
Sacred Backlash Wave
This attack is actually a combined effort between InuYasha and Kagome. It consists of Kagome firing one of her Sacred Arrows into the center of InuYasha's Backlash Wave before it connects. When it hits the enemy there is a higher chance that he will be destroyed by the combined powers.
