Gahagga hardly seemed to notice the last bit of what she'd said.
"Well, welcome to real life. Out here, we rulers make decisions with people's lives all the time. As a chessmaster, you're going to eventually send a friend into certain death or you're going to watch as someone is killed or perhaps you're going to take a life yourself. Best you start getting used to the idea that things don't always go the way you'd like them to. The only way to save as many people as possible is to be able to make the best decisions you can as fast as you can. In this case, it means either I take down your friends or they escape over the dead bodies of a number of my people. The best choice is to try to subdue the Etherans as quickly as possible. I might have already lost part of the squad in the courtyard because I underestimated your friends. How many of my troops, how many of my friends need to die fighting these three before you'll admit that they aren't in a peace kind of mood? I'll ask one more time: If you really want this to stop, how do you propose to make them listen?"

Gahagga's words were ice cold. Rini shut her eyes for fear she might actually start to cry. It was a long time before she found the strength to speak again.
"I'm scared, Korrino. I'm scared that my actions have really, really messed things up. Everything that's happening right now is entirely my fault, and it would have been entirely preventable had I not been so busy being so... so stupid," she whispered, turning away from him. She took a deep breath before continuing.
"My mother has this stupid saying. 'If if's and buts were candy and nuts, then we'd all have a Merry Festival of Time.' It's stupid, but it holds true here. No matter how much I want to, I can't change the past and neither can you. You're right, Gahagga. My friends are not in a listening mood, but it seems neither are you. You keep talking like all anybody wants to do is rescue me. Well, what if I don't want or need rescuing? Did any of you ever think of that? If I'm so important to you all, did any of you ever stop to think for one moment about what I want?"
She turned back to look at him, and there was fire burning in her eyes.
"What I want is for you all to quit behaving idiots. You say the King can't do what he pleases? Fine. Then let's see what the Queen can do."

Gahagga didn't flinch.
"Show me, then. If you want your voice heard, show me how to make them listen. I don't mind discussing idle fancies with you in the lounge, but when we return to time I'll only have time for truth. I'm willing to listen out there if you think you can speak, but don't expect me to just give over. The reality of the situation is that I cannot allow them to take you, regardless of cost. Find me a solution to the impossible problem of how both sides can win this, and you can have the peace you treasure so much. Otherwise you'll have to stand aside and let me do it my way. That's the deal, take it or leave it."

Rini just glared at the wolf mask.
"Fine."
